A huge (60,000 square meters) department store once considered the largest in Europe and among the top five largest stores in the world. The seven-story department store opened in the distant year of 1905. In the days leading up to the opening, the store placed full-page photo advertisements in newspapers using graphic design, an event that had never been seen before in Berlin and sparked lively discussions among its residents. The opening of the store literally changed the lives of many people as it led to rapid growth in the surrounding neighborhoods. One notable feature of the store is its delicatessen department, which offers around 500 varieties of bread and 1,800 types of cheese. In 2014, there was a daring attack involving tear gas on the Tiffany jewelry salon located in the store, resulting in 11 people being affected. Another notable feature of the store is a complex of several escalators, which appear quite unusual in photographs.
